Perkins marine diesels

A long-lived legacy fleet, plus current M-series engines.

Perkins marine engines cover a long history. The 4.108 in particular powered a great many sailing yachts and is still found in Australian boats decades after installation, alongside the more recent M-series.

Assessing an ageing installation

The engine is often not the limiting factor on these boats. Wiring, panels, instrumentation, fuel tanks, exhaust systems and engine beds age alongside the engine, and an assessment that looks only at compression misses most of the real cost.

Parts support for long-running families is generally better than owners fear, because the base engines had large industrial populations — but confirm it for your exact variant rather than assuming, and confirm it locally.

Repower or keep going

For a well-maintained legacy engine in a sound installation, continuing is often entirely reasonable. The calculation changes when the surrounding systems need work anyway, because much of a repower's cost lives in those systems rather than in the engine — see repowering a boat and ownership costs.

Before you buy or repower

  • Exact model and variant, and parts availability for that variant in Australia?
  • Condition of wiring, panel, tank, exhaust and beds, not just the engine?
  • Compression or crankcase condition where warranted, and oil analysis trends?
  • What would the surrounding systems cost regardless of whether the engine is replaced?
